Ah! The town with three names…

McCarthy Island, Georgetown, Janjanbureh 

Location 

Janjanbureh is a town located on MacCarthy Island, in the  Central River Region(CRR).  It is approximately 300 kilometers (about 186 miles) east of the Gambian capital, Banjul.

Janjanbureh town occupies a relatively small portion of MacCarthy Island. The island itself is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) long and 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) wide at its broadest point. â€‹

Accessible by good tarmac roads and a bridge from the North Bank or regular ferry from the South Bank

Public Transport is available and an amazing way to see changing countryside.

It is possible to navigate by the river too

Janjanbureh is a popular destination for short trips to spot hippos, crocodiles, and baboons, as well as a favourite for birdwatchers. The river is still tidal, with mangroves and tropical vegetation lining the banks, while farther inland, the landscape shifts to savanna grasslands and agricultural fields growing crops like rice, maize and peanuts.​

Temperatures here tend to be hotter than the coast and the change in tides is often noticeable due to stronger winds. The area is largely rural, with agriculture being the main livelihood.
