The Revival of The Kankurang Festival 2018
The revival of the Kankurang Festival in 2018 was a powerful turning point for Janjanbureh, reawakening a cultural celebration that had been on pause since the 1980s.
With unwavering support from various organisations and a strategic partnership led
by Adama Bah with NatureFriends International (NFI), the festival made a remarkable comeback, stronger than ever.
NFI, recognised for its commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation, chose to kick off its first-ever Landscape the Year tour on the African continent by visiting Senegal and The Gambia, arriving in Janjanbureh the last weekend of January, thus setting the date for future festivals.
The Kankurang Festival emerged as a vibrant symbol of cross-border unity, environmental awareness and community-driven tourism, establishing a solid foundation for sustainable development and cultural exchange between The Gambia and Senegal.
Many initiatives were established leading to environmental projects, school exchanges between Senegal and The Gambia and such initiatives as the Hiking Trails.
This festival was a resounding success, paving the way for future environmental initiatives and empowering the local youth to take charge and lead the way!
